Our role today is to clear back the pathways, riverbanks and the stream itself, in preparation for the forth-coming Duck Race.

We will be clearing back the pathways and helping maintain the fruit trees area we planted a number of years ago. We may be joined by a number of the local residents, who are now taking a more active roll in this sites maintenance.

To help in the removal of the Himalayan Balsam in the Hurston Warren area, we have a morning session at this SSSI site. Previous sessions have proved we are making a big difference with less and less of this invasive species around every time we visit. The area has boggy areas, brambles and nettles, so long trousers and long sleeve shirts, sturdy boots/wellies, are to be recommended. We may even have time for a little bracken bashing as well.

Meet passed the far end of West Sussex Golf Club car park, Golf Club Lane, Pulborough.

The new parking area is about 100m passed where we used to park. It is further south from the golf club and just passed Kate’s home entrance, through a gate on the right, on some hard standing, next to an old farm building.

We will be returning to Dyke Farm. This morning, we will be raking hay in one of the meadows that Nicola is creating. If we have the time and the energy, we will also need to weed around the trees that we planted back on our previous winters visits.

We continue the scrub clearance of these important chalk grasslands to improve the habitat for the butterflies. This site is more challenging than our regular sites as it is on the northern slopes of the Downs.

To help our fellow Storrington Conservation groups, we have arranged a morning session at Sullington Warren. We will be helping them with their maintenance of the area. The plan is to work on the wet heath towards the Water Lane end of the Sullington Warren. The work could include, raking cut heather to diversify the age of the heather which can then support different species, creating some scrapes for reptiles and invertebrates and clearing invasive scrub and burning it.

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE AS THIS IS A WEEK LATER THAN OUR NORMAL SATURDAY WORK-PARTY, SO IT TIES IN WITH THEIR WORK PARTY SESSSION.

Our annual A.G.M. takes place today with discussions about the previous years work (our successes or not), where we stand at the present and what direction the society should take in the future.
