WHAT HAVE WE DONE THIS MONTH
You will have seen from the special announcements page that that we are now working on the balancing pond on the Hormare - for some reason the developers called the area Coppice Park - so for all future note we will refer to the area as such.
A brief description of the Coppice Park site:
The site is reached via Hormare Crescent, left (or right) on Dean Way, and follow Dean Way down a hill where it ends at a children’s play area. At the left of the playground is a fine gravel path, which descends into the beech, oak, and ash woods. On the left is a big badger sett. On the right is the Hormare storm water overflow pond, bordered by a post and rail fence and backed by tall trees including a giant pine, legacy of the area once forming part of the grounds of Fryern Hall which was demolished in the 1970’s. The outflow of the pond, is into the river Stor. The bottom of the pond appears to be porous and it does not retain the water that flows into it. This is disappointing because aquatic surveys conducted by Storrington Conservation soon after the pond was constructed showed it to be very rich in pond life. As of 2 May 2009, it was ¾ filled with reeds. The remainder had shallow water. The 16 members who showed up this workday managed to clear the path of brambles and nettles around the pond and pick up all the litter in the area.
The new photo on the index page shows the work party.
